American Independence
Thirteen colonies declare independence and found a republic based on individual rights.
On 4 July 1776 Congress adopts a Declaration stating that all men are created equal and endowed with unalienable rights. Seven more years of war, and French support, secure it. The 1787 Constitution puts separation of powers, federalism and a Bill of Rights into practice — including religious freedom.
