The Hundred Years' War
England and France fight for more than a century and emerge as nations.
A dispute over the French crown and English holdings on the continent turns into endless campaigns. English longbowmen shatter mounted knights at Crécy and Agincourt; cannon begin to break castle walls. Joan of Arc lifts the siege of Orléans and turns the war before dying at the stake. England ends with almost nothing in France.
