Napoleon
A Corsican general becomes emperor, redraws Europe and loses at Waterloo.
Napoleon takes from the revolution an army and the principle of equality before the law. His Civil Code still governs France and underlies the law of dozens of countries. Wherever he went he dismantled the old order, opening ghetto gates in Italy and Germany. Russia destroyed his army in 1812, Waterloo his rule.
