The Hijra and the Rise of Islam
Muhammad's move from Mecca to Medina opens the Muslim calendar.
In Mecca the preaching of one God met resistance, so Muhammad and his followers move to Yathrib, which becomes Medina. There the community of believers becomes a polity as well. Muslims count years from the Hijra. Within a century the new faith rules from Spain to Central Asia.
