The fall of the monarchy and the Bolshevik seizure of power reshape the twentieth century.

In February, hunger and war-weariness sweep away three hundred years of Romanov rule. The Provisional Government neither leaves the war nor redistributes land, and in October the Bolsheviks take power almost unopposed. Civil war, terror and famine follow, and the first avowedly communist state is born.
