Saladin and the capture of Jerusalem

The Kurdish commander Salah ad-Din, having united Egypt and Syria under his hand, meets the army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem at the Horns of Hattin near Tiberias and destroys it almost entirely. Three months later Jerusalem surrenders — on terms of ransom, without the massacre by which the city remembered the crusaders' arrival in 1099. Saladin returns the Temple Mount to the Muslims and permits the Jews to settle again in the city from which they had been barred for eighty-eight years. The Third Crusade under Richard the Lionheart will win back part of the coast for the Latins, but not Jerusalem.
