Divrei Chaim of Sanz רבי חיים הלברשטאם מצאנז
Rabbi Chaim Halberstam, halakhist and head of the Sanz court
Rabbi Chaim Halberstam was rabbi of Sanz (Nowy Sącz) for more than forty years and at the same time a Hasidic rebbe. His responsa, Divrei Chaim, are a serious halakhic work consulted by non-Hasidic rabbis as well; he was also famed for charity, giving away whatever came into the house.
In 5629 he entered a bitter dispute with the Ruzhin-Sadigura house, accusing it of excessive luxury and of concessions to the spirit of the age. The quarrel split Galician Hasidism for years and remains one of the movement's hardest internal conflicts. The Sanz dynasty continued in Bobov, Klausenburg and other courts.
