prophetess and judge who led the war against Sisera
Devorah judged Israel around 2636, when Yavin of Chatzor and his general Sisera, with nine hundred iron chariots, had oppressed the country for twenty years. Scripture says plainly: «Devorah, a prophetess, wife of Lapidot, she judged Israel at that time.» She sat under a palm between Ramah and Beit-El, and people came up to her for judgement.
She summons Barak son of Avinoam and gives him an order from above: gather ten thousand men on Mount Tavor. Barak makes a condition: «If you go with me, I will go.» Devorah agrees, but warns that the glory will go to a woman — and so it does: Sisera, fleeing the field, dies in Yael's tent.
The battle is decided by rain: the Kishon floods and the chariots bog down. The Song of Devorah, one of the oldest poems in Scripture, sings it: «the stars from their courses fought against Sisera».
Afterwards «the land was quiet forty years». The sages count Devorah among the seven prophetesses of Israel.
