Mount Nebo הר נבו
The peak in Moav from which Moshe saw the whole Land and where he died without entering it.
Mount Nebo is the end of forty years and the end of Moshe's life. On the last day of his life, 7 Adar 2488, aged a hundred and twenty, he climbs from the plains of Moav to the summit of Pisgah. God shows him the whole country — Gilad to Dan, the Negev, the valley of Jericho. Midrash says he was shown not only space but time: the nation's entire future.
He asks to enter even as a commoner and is refused; tradition counts hundreds of prayers on the point. He dies «by the mouth of God», and the Torah adds a line without parallel: «no one knows his burial place to this day» — so that a leader's grave should never become a shrine. The people mourn thirty days on the plains of Moav.
