Sar Shalom of Belz רבי שלום רוקח מבעלזא

Rabbi Shalom Rokeach studied with the Seer of Lublin and with Rabbi Shlomo of Lutsk, and in 5577 became rabbi of Belz, where he built a great synagogue and gathered a court. Belz held to strictness in law and caution toward every innovation, and became the mainstay of Galician Jewry in the disputes with the Haskalah.

The court passed down his direct line. In the Shoah the Belz community was destroyed; Rebbe Aharon Rokeach escaped through Hungary to the Land of Israel, having lost almost his entire family, and raised the court again in Tel Aviv. Today Belz is one of the largest courts in Israel.
