Shushan (Susa) שושן הבירה
Capital of the Persian empire, city of Mordechai and Esther, and the setting of the Purim miracle.
Shushan was the winter capital of the Persian kings and the setting of the entire Megillat Esther. The scroll opens with Achashverosh's feast, a hundred and eighty days long, ending in a seven-day banquet for everyone in Shushan; the sages say the king wore the high priest's garments and drank from Temple vessels, certain that the seventy years had passed and no redemption would come.
Then: Vashti deposed, Esther crowned, Haman raised, and a decree to destroy every Jew in a hundred and twenty-seven provinces on a single day. Mordechai in sackcloth, a three-day fast, Esther entering unbidden — and the reversal. In Shushan the fighting lasts an extra day, which is why walled cities keep Purim on the fifteenth of Adar.
