Troyes טרוייש
The town in Champagne where Rashi was born and taught, and where the Tosafists began.
Troyes was a modest fair town in Champagne and the birthplace, in 4800, of Shlomo ben Yitzchak — Rashi. He studied in Worms and Mainz, returned home around the age of thirty, supported himself from vineyards, and opened a yeshiva.
In Troyes he wrote the commentaries that changed how Jewish books are read: on the Tanakh, selecting from midrash only what «settles the verse in its place», and on the Talmud, without which a page of Gemara is still barely legible. From 5235, when the first dated Hebrew printed book was Rashi on the Torah, the commentary has hardly been separated from the text.
His grandsons, the Rashbam and Rabbeinu Tam, made Troyes and its neighbouring towns the centre of the Tosafist school, which argued with their grandfather and extended his method.
