Joshua יהושע

The first book of the Prophets: crossing the Jordan, the conquest of Canaan and the division of the Land.

The book of Yehoshua picks up exactly where the Torah breaks off: Moshe is dead, and God tells his disciple to rise and cross the Jordan. Then come the spies in Jericho and Rachav, the stopping of the river, circumcision and the first Pesach in the Land, the fall of Jericho's walls, the defeat at Ai because of Achan, the Gibeonites' ruse and the battle of the five kings.

The second half contains almost no fighting: it is a meticulous survey of tribal portions — borders, towns, cities of refuge and Levitical cities. The division by lot took seven years, following seven years of conquest.

The book ends with two assemblies, the last at Shechem, where the people declare «the Lord our God we will serve». Yehoshua dies at a hundred and ten.
