Jochebed יוכבד
mother of Moshe, Aharon and Miriam; a midwife who saved Hebrew infants
Yocheved is a daughter of Levi, and the Torah notes that she was born «between the walls», at the very moment the family entered Egypt, in 2238. She was therefore 130 when Moshe was born — a wonder the midrash compares to Sarah's.
The sages identify her with Shifra, one of the two midwives at the opening of Exodus: with Puah (Miriam) she disobeyed Pharaoh's order to kill the boys and kept them alive at her own risk. «The midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them» — the Torah's first act of conscientious disobedience to power.
When her third child was born she hid him three months, then made a pitched basket of reeds and set it among the rushes. Pharaoh's daughter found the baby, and Miriam at once offered a nurse — the child's own mother. So Yocheved raised her son for three years, paid by an Egyptian princess.
Tradition says she lived to see the Exodus.
