The Division into the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah

Solomon died leaving a kingdom at its peak and on the edge of rupture. His son Rehoboam came to Shechem to be acclaimed king and heard the people's condition: lighten the yoke your father laid on us. The elders who had served Solomon advised gentleness — be their servant today and they will serve you forever. Rehoboam preferred the counsel of the young men he had grown up with: "My little finger is thicker than my father's loins; my father chastised you with whips, I will chastise you with scorpions." The people answered, "What portion have we in David? To your tents, O Israel."

A prophecy stood behind it. Ahijah of Shiloh had met Jeroboam ben Nebat on the road, torn his new cloak into twelve pieces and given him ten: the kingdom would be taken from David's house because Solomon had let foreign worship take root. For David's sake the sentence was delayed to his son's days.

From this year there were two kingdoms in one small land: Israel in the north with ten tribes, and Judah in the south with Jerusalem, the Temple and the unbroken line of David.
