Shishak's Campaign: the Golden Shields Replaced with Bronze

Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess.

In the fifth year Shishak king of Egypt came up: twelve hundred chariots, sixty thousand horsemen and troops without number. He took the fortified cities of Judah and advanced on Jerusalem. The prophet Shemaiah said to the king and the officers: "You have abandoned Me, and so I abandon you into the hand of Shishak." They humbled themselves and said, "The LORD is just." Then the word came: you will not be destroyed, but you shall become his servants, "that they may know what it is to serve Me and what it is to serve the kingdoms of the earth."

Shishak entered the city and carried off the treasures of the House of the LORD and of the royal palace — "he took everything," including the golden shields Solomon had made. Rehoboam had bronze ones made instead and entrusted them to the officers of the guard at the palace entrance. And then comes a detail worth a whole chapter: whenever the king went into the House of the LORD, the guards would carry the shields out and bring them back to the guardroom afterwards.

The gold was gone for good; the ceremony remained. Forty years after the Temple was built, the kingdom pays for its own capital for the first time — and behaves as though nothing has changed.
