Enoch חנוך
seventh generation from Adam; «walked with God» and was taken alive
In the long list of pre-Flood generations everyone dies, and the formula repeats like a metronome: «and he died». Of Chanoch alone it is said differently: «And Chanoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him.» He lived 365 years — the shortest life on the list — and vanished in the year 987.
Tradition explains this variously. The plain reading is that he did not die an ordinary death but was taken alive. Midrash adds that he was a wavering man, righteous and then not, and God took him early while he was still righteous. Later mystical literature makes him enormous: a shoemaker who joined upper worlds with every stitch, and then the angel Metatron, scribe of the heavenly court.
The Talmudic sages treated such accounts with caution. Chanoch is father of Metushelach and great-grandfather of Noach.
