The Taking of Chanoch
«And Chanoch walked with God, and he was no more, for God took him» — in AM 987, aged 365, he leaves the world without dying.
Fifty-seven years after Adam's death, Chanoch disappears from the world. The Torah describes it in a phrase unlike any other in chapter 5: instead of «and he died», «and he was no more, for God took him». He is 365 — less than half the age of his contemporaries. He leaves a son, Methuselah, aged 300, and a grandson, Lemech, aged 113.
What happened is not explained, and the tradition is deliberately careful. The plain reading is that he died young. The midrashic reading, which became dominant, is that he was taken alive because in a generation sliding downward his righteousness was too fragile to last. Rashi says it plainly: he was righteous, but easily turned back to evil, so God hurried and took him.
Later texts, from Second Temple works to the Zohar, built an entire literature around him, even identifying him with the angel Metatron. The classical Talmud says nothing of the kind.
