The Death of Adam
The first human dies at 930, having seen nine generations of his descendants — and the first death from old age in history.
«All the days of Adam were 930 years, and he died.» The formula «and he died» appears here as the close of a full life rather than an act of violence: Abel was killed, Adam dies of age. By then he had seen nine generations — down to Lemech, who was 56. Noach would be born 126 years after his death and never meet him.
The number is read against the sentence «on the day you eat of it you shall surely die». A day of God, says the Psalm, is a thousand years; Adam died within that first millennium, seventy years short of it — and the midrash explains where those seventy went.
His death closes the age of direct witness. While he lived, someone in the world remembered Eden and had spoken with God face to face. After 930 there is only transmission. Chanoch is taken 57 years later, Shet dies 112 years later, and the world passes to generations who know the beginning only by report.
