Abiathar the Priest אביתר הכהן

Saul, learning that the priests of Nob had fed the fugitive David, ordered them all killed: eighty-five men in linen ephods, and the whole town. One escaped — Abiathar son of Ahimelech. He fled to David and told him; David answered: stay with me, do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks yours; with me you are safe.

For forty years he was at his side. On the night of Absalom's revolt he carried the Ark out with Zadok and took it back with him at the king's word.

They parted at the very end. As the aged David was failing, Adonijah held a feast and proclaimed himself king; on his side were Joab the commander and Abiathar the priest. Nathan, Zadok and Solomon were not invited — which is what gave the plot away. Solomon was anointed at Gihon, and the conspiracy collapsed.

Solomon's sentence was milder than it might have been: go to Anathoth, to your own field; you deserve death, but I will not put you to death today, because you carried the Ark before my father and suffered in all that he suffered. So Abiathar was removed from the priesthood — "and the word of the LORD was fulfilled that He had spoken concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh."

Four centuries later Jeremiah would come out of that same Anathoth, "of the priests who were in Anathoth."
