Kuzari הכוזרי

The dialogue of a Khazar king with a philosopher, a Christian, a Muslim and a Jew — a defence of Jewish faith through history.

Yehuda haLevi — poet, physician and thinker of the Spanish golden age — built his book as a conversation. The king of the Khazars dreams that his intentions are pleasing but his deeds are not. Seeking the right path, he summons in turn a philosopher, a Christian, a Muslim and, last, a Jew.

The Jew's answer begins unexpectedly. He does not speak of a Creator in the abstract but says: «we believe in the God who brought us out of Egypt». Not a proof but an event, witnessed by a whole people, is the ground of faith. From this grows the rest: the priority of direct tradition over speculation, the bond between the people and the Land, the meaning of the commandments, and why exile does not refute election.

HaLevi followed his own logic and left Spain for the Land of Israel.
