Tiberias טבריה
The city on the Kinneret where the last Sanhedrin sat, the Jerusalem Talmud was completed and the Torah was vocalised.
Tiberias was founded by Herod Antipas in the emperor's honour and was at first considered impure, having been built over an old burial ground; sages would not enter. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, emerging from his cave, purified it, and from then on Tiberias became a leading centre of Torah in the Land of Israel.
After wandering from Yavne through Usha and Tzipori, the Sanhedrin settles here — and here it finally ceases. In its academy Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish lay the foundation of what becomes the Jerusalem Talmud, sealed around 4110, cut short by persecution yet preserving the voice of the Land.
Centuries later the Tiberian masoretes, the Ben Asher family, devise the vowel and cantillation system by which the Tanakh is printed to this day.
