Joash יואש

Joash was seven when Jehoiada brought him out of the Temple and set the crown on him. He reigned forty years, and «did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the days that Jehoiada the priest instructed him» (2 Kings 12:3). The chief work of those years was the repair of the Temple: the king had a chest set by the entrance with a hole in its lid, into which the people put silver, and with it stonecutters and carpenters were hired without any reckoning demanded of them, «for they dealt honestly».

After Jehoiada's death the princes of Judah came and persuaded the king, and he listened to them: they forsook the House of the Lord and served the asherim. Zechariah son of Jehoiada rebuked the people — and was stoned at the king's command in the Temple court; dying, he said: «May the Lord see and require it» (2 Chronicles 24:20–22). That same year an Aramean army came, and Joash himself was killed in his bed by his own servants. AM 3054–3094, approximate; academically 835–796 BCE.
