Ben Zoma בן זומא

"Who is wise? He who learns from every person. Who is mighty? He who conquers his impulse. Who is rich? He who is happy with his lot. Who is honoured? He who honours others."

The four answers are built the same way: each moves a quality out of the realm of circumstance into the realm of action. Wisdom is not a stock of knowledge but a way of dealing with people; strength is not over others but over oneself; wealth is not a quantity but an attitude; honour is not what you receive but what you give.

He is also the Ben Zoma whose exposition appears in the Haggadah: Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah says he could not understand where it is derived that the exodus from Egypt should be recalled at night, "until Ben Zoma expounded it."

And he is the second of the four who entered the pardes: "he looked and was harmed." The Talmud speaks of him cautiously afterwards, and records that he was found in a daze and answered that he had been gazing at the space between the upper and the lower waters.
