Noadiah the Prophetess נועדיה הנביאה

Nehemiah was building the walls of Jerusalem under constant pressure: letters, rumours, invitations to talks out in the open country, a hired man urging him to shut himself in the Temple so that he could be accused of cowardice and sacrilege.

Listing those who took part in it, he names her too: "remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to their deeds, and also Noadiah the prophetess and the rest of the prophets who tried to make me afraid."

That is all. No speech, no act, no sequel. But the mention itself says a good deal: a woman is called a prophetess without any qualification — the title is granted her — and at the same time she is placed among the opponents. When Scripture lists the seven prophetesses of Israel, Noadiah is not among them; and it does not take the title from her in the one place where she is mentioned either.

In this base she deliberately stands beside Huldah and Hannah: in the Tanakh the prophetic gift is not a mark of a person's quality, and that is visible only when both sides stand side by side.
